Recreational figure skating is very useful for good health and doing exercises. It can be started or finished at any age depending on physical and mental conditions. It also means that there are always possibilities for takingpart in competitions.

Figure skating develops mental and physical strength and it is also an excellent aerobe sport. Figure skating and ice dance contain a lot of sliding and stepping elements, poises and spins which can give joy for skaters. Jumps with one or one and a half revolutions can be a little bit more difficult, so the coach’s instructions are very important.

In many countries (mainly in Western Europe) there are a lot of competitions in different age or skilled groups, so these competitors can enter.

In Hungary the program of the recreational figure skating was worked out by Abaházy-Lukács Péter (recreational sport manager and figure skating coach) in 2006 and later it was completed by Bikfalvi Tünde (figure skating leading coach). (Both are the members of the professional team of the Havasszépe SE  és Jégszínház.)

Following this there were four competitions –in the Ice Rink of Miskolc-and it was proved that this kind of figure skating is very attractive for home and foreign competitors. More and more skater entered for our competitions and we also had more competitors in the categories of ISU. So it can be very important for the youngsters, too to have recreational competitions.

After these experiences we reviewed the international recreational competition requirements with the help of Kulcsár Zsófia  (figure skating coach) and we motioned the revised competition rules and requirements to the Hungarian National Skating Federation. The professional committee headed by dr Jurek Eszter accepted it, and gave permission for organizing national competitions. So in 2010 competitors can enter for the Hungarian Recreational Figure Skating Competition for the second time.

The main features of ISU competitionsare the high requirements in every category. The age is also important for the categories and the minimum of the requirement is determined. In music vocal is not accepted. Objects aren’t allowed and the technical knowledge is the most important in scoring.

The main features of recreational competitionsare the varieties of categories. In every age group there are more technical levels (bronze, silver, gold), and the top of the requirements are determined. In music the vocal is also accepted. Objects are allowed if necessary for the performance and not dangerous for the ice or the skater; and costume is also allowed. The technical score and the presentation score are equally important.

Regulations of the interpretative skatingare very close to the recreational categories but static objects can also be used on ice. In scoring the presentation is more important than the technical knowledge.

Some countries (e.g. Italy) organizeinterpretative group skatingcompetitions. They determine the minimum numbers of the members of the groups, the duration, and the maximum place of objects on ice. In scoring the whole performance, the expressiveness, the dynamics and the synchrony are the most important elements.

In Canazei, Italy we won the first prize on the interpretative group skating competition in 2009. It gave us a good idea: we completed the interpretative group skating program to an ice theatrical show. So today we have an own ice theatrical profile in our club.
